Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 896
1797. 13 stars. PCGS graded EF-40. Light toning on the obverse and reverse of gunmetal gray with deeper russet hues surrounding the periopheral devices. The strike is sharp for this rare issue, with all of Liberty's curls well separated and brought up by the dies, the eagle shows good feather definition as well. 1797 brought many star combinations to half dimes, one obverse die had 15 stars, the next obverse die had 16 stars as Tennessee joined the Union. At this point the Mint decided they had to quit adding stars as their was simply not enough room on the dies as more and more states came into the Union. Thus in 1797 it was determined to stick with the original 13 stars of the first states. When this obverse die was engraved, it shows the original 13 stars and is instantly recognizable. Furthermore this is one of the toughest die pairings of the entire series to find at all, let alone in a nice grade like XF40. This issue is a true rarity in all grades. Only 44,527 struck. Pop 5; 11 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4260) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1801. NGC graded AU-55. Mostly untoned in silver gray with a trace of russet gold, with lots of fine details. A tough date to find at all, especially so this well preserved. This is an early die state and one of impressive quality. These tiny half dimes are so rare in high grades, and finding one without damage is a formidable task for the collector. This nearly mint state coin is destined for a specialist who appreciates its many charms and recognizes what a special opportunity this represents. Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 5 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1805. LM-1, Rarity 4. NGC graded Mint Error AG Details, Reverse Brockage, Damaged. Clearly struck with considerable hair definition on Liberty, but with scratches and graffiti. The reverse shows the brockage, which is somewhat weakly struck as expected. Needless to say, this is an extraordinary mint error, while early brockages are known they tend to be extremely rare on silver coins from this era. Not only is an 1805 half dime a seldom seen date, but the mintage was low and precious few of these are around in any grade. Add to this the incredible brockage error and you have a coin that is really quite special despite the initials imparted by someone long ago who noticed the unusual nature of this piece. Estimate Value $600 - UP

1834. NGC graded Proof 66+. A wonderful gem proof half dime. Only 25 are believed to have been struck and this is tied with the finest seen. Exceptional rich lilac and teal toning spans both sides, with boldly mirrored fields surrounding the frosted devices. These were likely struck at the time the King of Siam set was being prepared, so special care was taking to make these coins as close to perfect as possible. Here is one that was not only carefully produced, but ever so carefully preserved for going on two centuries. A true prize that will never lose its appeal. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimate Value $30,000 - UP

1837. No stars, small date. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with light golden toning on both sides. A pleasing type coin with all the hallmarks desired by collectors; eye appeal, rarity and a proven track record. These tiny half dimes were the first appearance of the new Gobrecht design for this denomination, and they proved quite popular. Stars were added to the obverse design the follwing year, so this 1837 style became a very short-lived type coin. And a handsome example it is! Pop 29; 25 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4312) Estimate Value $2,100 - 2,200

1854. Arrows. NGC graded MS-67. Most of these new style Arrows half dimes were struck with old tenor silver coins sent up to Philadelphia from New Orleans, these older coins had a slightly higher silver content, and thus many were melted for the profit, others returned to the mints for recoinage. Not many were saved at the time, as even a half dime represented a fair amount of money in 1854. This one was not only saved, but carefully and perfectly preserved to this day. Boldly struck and fully white. Pop 4; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimate Value $7,000 - UP
